One of Africa's oldest and largest refugee settlements, Nakivale is home to hundreds of thousands who have fled conflict in the DRC, Burundi, South Sudan, and beyond.
Established in 1958, Nakivale hosts over 100,000 people at any given time — the majority Congolese, with significant numbers from Burundi, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Somalia. Life here is defined by long waiting: for peace, for papers, for a future.
Many residents are connected to APF's Sheffield congregation — family members of diaspora communities who remain displaced while relatives rebuild life in the UK.
Worship in Kinyarwanda, Kinyamulenge, French, and Swahili; trauma healing sessions combining Scripture, testimony, and recovery practice; and distribution of food, medicine, Bibles, and supplies to the most vulnerable — the elderly, disabled, widowed, and families with no breadwinner.
